Herrera Introduces 'Good Government Legal Guide,' to Provide Useful, Accessible Overview of Civic Duties

Expanded, Newly-Redesigned City Attorney Publication Updates Previous Editions with Discussion of New Laws, More Detailed Table of Contents and Index

SAN FRANCISCO (Apr. 7, 2004) -- City Attorney Dennis Herrera today announced the publication of the "Good Government Legal Guide for 2004," an updated and expanded handbook for employees and officials of the City and County of San Francisco that provides a useful and accessible overview of major laws governing their conduct as public servants-from public meetings and public records responsibilities, to conflict-of-interest and personal financial reporting requirements. The new edition, which has been newly-redesigned to enhance usability, replaces a previous guide published annually by the office entitled "An Overview of the Laws Governing the Conduct of Public Officials." The guide also offers new material on City conflict of interest laws, which were substantially revised with voters' passage of Proposition E in the November 2003 election.

"As public officials, we have no higher responsibility than to conduct the functions of San Francisco government in a manner that is honest, open to scrutiny and responsive to the citizens we serve," Herrera said. "For all the public servants who bear that responsibility, as well as for the citizens and journalists to whom we are responsible, I am pleased to introduce this inaugural edition of the Good Government Legal Guide as a helpful and abiding resource."

Distribution of more than 1,000 hardcopies of the guide begins today to City department heads, executive management and members of City boards and commissions. Copies are also available for viewing at the Government Information Center at the Public Library's Main Branch, 100 Larkin Street in San Francisco. Additional hardcopies may be purchased for approximately $10 per book from the City's Reprographics and Mail Department, which may be reached at (415) 554-6436.

The "Good Government Legal Guide for 2004" is also available as an Adobe Acrobat PDF on the City Attorney's Web site, where it will remain linked from the home page throughout the coming year, at http://www.sfgov.org/cityattorney/
