Statement from City Attorney Dennis Herrera on oil companies’ motions to dismiss

City Attorney Dennis Herrera filed a lawsuit against the top five oil and gas companies in Sept. 2017 over costs of climate change

SAN FRANCISCO (May 24, 2018) — City Attorney Dennis Herrera issued the following statement after oral arguments were heard in federal court today on motions by five major oil and gas companies to dismiss his climate change lawsuit against them:

“The fossil fuel industry is trying to prevail on a technicality and avoid the merits of this case. They’re arguing that the court does not have the authority to look at their longstanding track record of selling and promoting fossil fuels while deceiving the public about climate change. We think that’s incorrect. A courtroom is exactly the place to get to the truth about what these companies knew, when they knew it, and how their actions are harming San Francisco and Oakland.”

The cases are: People of the State of California v. BP P.L.C. et al., San Francisco Superior Court Case No. CGC 17-561370, filed Sept. 19, 2017.  People of the State of California v. BP P.L.C. et al., Alameda County Superior Court Case No. RG17875889, filed Sept. 19, 2017.
