Herrera statement on Supreme Court’s DACA ruling

DACA recipients came to this country as children through no fault of their own, and they have gone on to enroll in colleges, start businesses, and buy homes. They are our neighbors, our colleagues, our friends.”

SAN FRANCISCO (June 18, 2020) — City Attorney Dennis Herrera released the following statement today on the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to block President Trump’s attempt to abolish the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program:

City Attorney Dennis Herrera

“This is a victory for the American dream. DACA recipients came to this country as children through no fault of their own, and they have gone on to enroll in colleges, start businesses, and buy homes. They are our neighbors, our colleagues, our friends. The Trump administration should stop trying to shatter families and instead focus on supporting Americans as we struggle with a global pandemic and nationwide economic collapse.”

Background

The U.S. Supreme Court in a decision released today found that the Trump administration acted illegally when it moved to abolish the DACA program because it failed to provide a reasoned explanation for its action or address the hardship to DACA recipients. San Francisco was part of a coalition of local governments that filed a friend-of-the-court brief, also known as an amicus brief, in the case.
