SAN FRANCISCO (August 15, 2022) — Statement Released Jointly by the federal Centers for Medicare & Medicare Services (CMS), the California Department of Public Health (CDPH), and the City and County of San Francisco on developments related to Laguna Honda Hospital & Rehabilitation Center (Laguna Honda):

City Attorney David Chiu and Mayor London Breed speak at press conference regarding Laguna Honda Hospital

“All parties are committed to ensuring that, regardless of income, people living in nursing homes are receiving safe, high-quality services and support. We are all focused on resident wellbeing while Laguna Honda continues to provide critically needed health care services for over 600 residents.

“As we continue to work together, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is extending the availability of Medicare and Medicaid payments by lengthening the term of Laguna Honda’s closure plan by two months, to November 13, 2022. During this extended period, transfers and discharges of current residents will remain paused. As has been standard throughout this process, residents who want to leave the facility retain the right to do so. The CMS-appointed onsite facilitator who was installed on July 26, 2022, will remain on site working with CMS, CDPH, and the City and County of San Francisco. Medicare and Medicaid payments for new admissions to Laguna Honda have been on hold since January 14, 2022, and this temporary hold will remain in effect.

“CMS, CDPH, and the City and County of San Francisco will work together as Laguna Honda continues to provide critical services for vulnerable residents in San Francisco.”
