Chokshi has spent over a decade working to increase diversity, equity, and inclusion in the legal profession

SAN FRANCISCO (October 25, 2022) — City Attorney David Chiu announced today that Komal Chokshi has joined the San Francisco City Attorney’s Office as its first Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), where she will design and implement all Office DEI initiatives. As a practicing attorney for nearly two decades with extensive experience devising and coordinating DEI programs at public and private law firms, Chokshi is uniquely qualified for this new role.

“Komal Chokshi has shown a deep commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion throughout her career,” said City Attorney David Chiu. “With Komal’s experience implementing initiatives as the first Chief DEI Officer of the University of California’s Legal Department and her many years spent as a litigator, she is extremely qualified to serve as our Office’s first DEI Director. Over the past several years, the Office has implemented new DEI efforts and improved transparency in our hiring and promotive processes. I know that with Komal’s leadership, we can take those efforts to the next level and work to integrate DEI principles into all Office programs and activities.”

“It is a great honor to serve as the first Director of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion for the San Francisco City Attorney’s Office,” said Komal Chokshi. “City Attorney David Chiu has an unsurpassed commitment to DEI—this is evident in both the Office’s legal work and its efforts to create a more inclusive work environment. I am thrilled to be doing the work I love for the City I love.”

Chokshi served as the first Chief Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Officer at the University of California’s Legal Department, where she designed and implemented DEI initiatives, including an innovative outside counsel DEI “report card” program. Before heading up UC Legal’s DEI efforts, she was a litigator at the University of California managing a significant caseload. Chokshi previously spent 13 years as a litigator at a number of private law firms and coordinated several firms’ participation in minority bar association programs.

With a deep foundational knowledge on DEI programs and best practices, Chokshi is a frequent panelist and speaker on diversity in the legal profession and has received numerous honors over the course of her career. Chokshi served as a California Minority Counsel Program Ambassador, Asian Pacific Islander Legal Outreach Board Member, and Commissioner on the Sonoma County Commission on the Status of Women. In 2008, she received the South Asian Bar Association’s Young Lawyer of the Year Award.

Chokshi earned a Bachelor of Art degree in English from the University of California, Berkeley and a Juris Doctorate from the University of California, Davis.
