Herrera statement on release of City Attorney’s SLUG investigation report

Investigation’s findings support City Controller’s action to bar non-profit from future City contracts

City Attorney Dennis Herrera has released his office’s investigation report into the San Francisco League of Urban Gardeners, or SLUG, which summarizes his office’s investigation’s findings into the nonprofit organization. The report, which was provided to the San Francisco Chronicle in response to a public records request, provides evidentiary support for debarment proceedings by the City Controller’s Office, which conducted its own financial investigation. The investigations confirm reports published in the Chronicle earlier this year that street-sweepers for the city-funded program were pressured to cast absentee ballots and take part in electioneering activities. City Attorney Dennis Herrera issued the following statement: “SLUG was once a well-intentioned national model of an urban job training program. Obviously it’s very sad and disappointing to see that promise undone by corruption and mismanagement. But that is exactly what we uncovered in two separate investigations.”
