CA Supreme Court upholds eviction protections for teachers and families

Statement from City Attorney Dennis Herrera

SAN FRANCISCO (April 26, 2018) — City Attorney Dennis Herrera issued the following statement yesterday after the California Supreme Court declined to review a First District Court of Appeal ruling upholding San Francisco eviction protections for educators and families with children.

“This is a resounding victory for teachers and families with school-age children throughout San Francisco. Displacing a teacher from their home in the middle of the school year disrupts not only the teacher’s life, but the lives and learning of every child in their classroom. Displacing a schoolchild from his or her home during the school year similarly damages that child’s ability to learn. We are doing everything we can to counter this housing crisis and prevent people from losing their homes through no fault of their own. This case was about common-sense protections that give teachers and families with schoolchildren a fighting chance to stay in their city.”
